ANTIOXIDANT CAPS AND EXERCISE

DAILY NUTRITION TIP-Antioxidant Supplements May Block One of the Benefits of Exercise
Tuesday May 12, 2009

A study published this week in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences claims that taking antioxidant vitamins C and E may prevent exercise from improving insulin sensitivity. This may be important information if you're working out to stave off diabetes -- and taking a daily dose of vitamins. The researchers found that healthy male subjects who exercised and took the vitamins didn't show an improvement in how their bodies react to insulin, while the subjects who exercised, but didn't take the supplements, showed an increase in insulin sensitivity.
This is one of those studies that makes me think, "Hmmmmmm...."
It's interesting and something I've never thought of before. We know exercise is a good strategy for people who are at risk for diabetes because it helps to reduce high blood pressure, makes it easier to stay trim and improves how your body responds to insulin. In fact, most people with diabetes or who are pre-diabetic are told to exercise.
While exercise is extremely beneficial for your health, it also increases production of some extra free-radical oxygen molecules that can damage the healthy cells in your body. Some vitamins, especially vitamins A and C function as antioxidants; that is they counteract those free radical oxygen molecules before they do any damage.
Taking vitamins seems like the perfect solution for stopping those post-exercise free-radicals in their tracks. And they probably do, but, according to the researchers of this new study, reducing the amount of free-radicals may actually eliminate some of the benefits of exercise, at least insulin sensitivity.
Why? I'll try to explain. For exercise to improve your body's reaction to insulin, a certain threshold of free-radical production may be necessary for to trigger that reaction. The increased levels of free-radicals stimulates your body to take certain steps to protect itself -- like increasing insulin sensitivity. Taking those antioxidant vitamins may wipe out enough free-radicals so that threshold isn't reached. It doesn't mean the exercise isn't beneficial for other reasons, but at least in this study, the lack of free radicals appear to have reduced some of the benefit of exercise.
I think it's important to know this is a small study, and the subjects were healthy young men, so we don't know if the results would be the same in older people, women, or anyone at a high risk for diabetes. But it is an interesting study.

COMMENT

(1) Leonard Dabydeen says:
Taking your vitamins and doing your exercises certainly trigger a healthy body ( for the “normal” person ). Reminds you of a Hulk Hogan commercial. But if you are in the insulin-control/diabetic module, then your V+E (Vitamin + Ex) need to be a lot more regulated. All your gym classes can be done at home, in a moderate way. Fitness clubs are not made for diabetics.Ignoramus family doctors only tell you to exercise. And you go to the gym. WRONG !!

SWINE FLU? OR HOG HOAX ?

The Great Swine Flu Hoax‏
From: Total Health Breakthroughs (support@totalhealthbreakthrough.com)

SPECIAL REPORT ON SWINE FLU
May 8, 2009
Everything You Need To Know About “The Swine Flu”
By Lisa Forgione, MD
The recent outbreak of swine flu is causing widespread panic and concern among many people, but by all indications, it is no worse than the seasonal flu that usually strikes every winter.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has determined that the current strain of swine flu is caused by a new type of influenza A virus. There are four viral sub-types, one found in humans, one in birds and two in swine. The swine sub-type is causing the flu in humans in the United States. It is spread from pigs to humans and then from humans to humans.
The CDC believes that the current outbreak of swine flu (officially called the H1N1 flu) started in March 2009 in certain areas of Mexico. Mexico is currently reporting the largest number of cases at 727, with 26 deaths confirmed at this time. There is one confirmed death in the United States and 403 total cases. These cases are spread among 38 states in the continental US.
People do not normally get the swine flu. The CDC has determined that this swine sub-type is contagious and is spreading from human to human, through large airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets contain the virus and spread the illness fairly easily.
Have you been exposed to swine flu? New York, Texas, California, Delaware and Arizona are the states reporting the most number of cases. Recent travel to Mexico and contact with an infected person there are also risk factors.
Signs and Symptoms of Swine Flu
The signs and symptoms of swine flu are:
• Fever
• Cough
• Sore throat
• Runny nose
• Headache
• Muscle pains
• Occasionally, vomiting and diarrhea
In most people, the symptoms are mild and self-limited. Persons with other chronic medical conditions and the very young and very old are at risk for complications, such as severe respiratory problems and bacterial pneumonia. The incubation period is one to seven days after exposure.
If you think you may have been exposed to the swine flu and are developing any of the signs and symptoms, you should see your doctor immediately. He or she can test you easily with a nasal swab. Many hospitals have a rapid test for influenza A. Any positive result is sent to the state lab for further testing.
Conventional Treatment and Prevention
The good news is that the swine flu is easy to treat with anti-viral medications. The treatment works best when started within two days of symptom onset. The two medications that are being used to treat swine flu are Tamiflu and Relenza. Tamiflu is a pill that is taken twice per day for 5 days and Relenza is an inhaled medication.
If your doctor determines you have the swine flu and need treatment, he or she will likely give you one of these medications depending on your symptoms and the severity of your illness. Both medications are generally well tolerated and have minimal side effects. You can also use over-the-counter pain medications and cough suppressants, drink lots of fluids and rest to feel better.
As for any illness or medical issue, prevention is the best course of therapy. You can prevent the swine flu by minimizing your exposure. This includes avoiding travel to areas where the highest numbers of cases are being reported. If you need to be around someone with the swine flu or who possibly has it, wear a surgical mask and wash your hands well after your interaction with them. If you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose and then wash your hands.
Alternative Treatments for the Flu
Eating an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables and plenty of high-quality protein will boost your immune system by providing the nutrients, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that fight infections such as the swine flu. Regular aerobic exercise increases the number of circulating white blood cells in your system which will help stop any developing infections.
Many people prefer to use herbal remedies when treating viral infections. There are several therapies that are specific to treating viruses. Here are just a few:
Lomatium. Native Americans use this anti-viral herb to treat upper respiratory infections. It also appeared to help them combat the 1917 Spanish Flu outbreak. Lomatium is available in capsule or liquid form.
Reishi Mushrooms. These medicinal mushrooms are used in Chinese medicine to fight all types of viral and bacterial infections. They are high in antioxidants and soothe the respiratory tract. Reishi mushrooms are available raw or as a supplement or tea.
Garlic. Garlic stimulates the immune system and helps stop the spread of viruses, bacteria and fungi in the body. It works best when crushed and eaten raw. For individuals that cannot tolerate raw garlic, an odorless aged garlic extract (Kyolic garlic) is also effective.
Pau d’Arco. This herb grows in the Brazilian rainforest and has been shown to kill both viruses and bacteria. It is also an effective expectorant. Pau d’arco is available in capsules, tea or tincture.
Beta glucan. This cultured extract derived from yeast and mushrooms is a powerful immune-stimulant. Hundreds of studies have shown that it stimulates the production and activity of immune cells. Beta glucan is available as a nutritional supplement.
Colloidal Silver. This liquid solution of microscopic silver particles has been shown to kill all types of viruses without any resistant strains. Colloidal silver is very strong and should not be used every day. You can use it occasionally when you feel you may be developing a viral infection. It is available as both a nasal spray and oral supplement.
Finally…
As a physician, I feel there is no need for public alarm or fear about the swine flu. I consider it to be a late seasonal outbreak of influenza A. I actually did not see many cases of influenza A or B this winter in the Emergency Room, so perhaps “flu season” was just delayed this year compared to previous years.
The best news is that swine flu is self-limited, easily treated and can be prevented with simple precautions, a healthy diet, regular exercise and a variety of natural therapies.

BITTER-SWEET SUGAR

A SPOONFUL OF SUGAR

By Bob Livingston • May 1st, 2009 • Category: Bob Livingston, Health, Personal Liberty Articles

Well, it’s sugar—but we measure it as blood sugar or insulin in the body. Sugar, that sweet and dangerous toxin, is basic to the American diet. No wonder we are born dying!

Here is the point: When our sugar consumption pushes over fasting 10 IU/ml, we begin to become sugar burners instead of fat burners—and weight and health problems begin. This includes most of us.

Low insulin stops our bodies from burning sugar and switches us to burning fat. We can forget weight loss as long as we are burning sugar and not fat, no matter which plan we are on.

"One of the earliest effects of excess insulin is weight gain, as insulin stimulates the storage of fat and the burning of sugar. Excess insulin (sugar) lowers cellular levels of magnesium, a mineral that relaxes the arteries and improves blood flow. Insulin also increases accumulations of sodium, causing fluid retention, resulting in high blood pressure. Elevated insulin also increases inflammatory compounds in the blood that damage the arteries and promote the formation of blood clots that may cause a heart attack. It stimulates spasms in the arteries and arrhythmia in the heart. Furthermore, it causes abnormalities in blood fats, including reductions in protective HDL cholesterol and elevations in triglycerides and small, dense LDL cholesterol. All this translates into a significant increase in risk of heart disease." (The Rosedale Diet.)

Bottom line is—don’t eat sugar and refined carbohydrates. This is difficult because the food processors have us all addicted. There just isn’t much left that doesn’t have fructose corn syrup in it. We have to read every label.

Now every time we see an overweight person, we know that there goes a sugar burner for fuel.

High blood sugar levels is a hallmark of aging and disease. The reverse of this is to say that low blood sugar and low insulin is a hallmark of health and longevity.

If we decide that low blood sugar is the basis of longevity and health, then we must be saying that our medical doctors are doctoring symptoms. Our M.D., should be telling their patients, "I can’t help you until you get your insulin (blood sugar) down and then you won’t need me." He wouldn’t dare!

If what we are saying here is true, most medical practitioners would have no patients. Instead of prescribing Lipitor® etc., they should be trying to get us to lower our blood sugar or insulin. High cholesterol and low insulin don’t go together. They repel.

If modern medicine didn’t have symptoms they wouldn’t have a reason to "practice" medicine. For medicine is primarily symptomology.

What causes high insulin? It is sugar in any form. Oh, you know that. But do you know that any carbohydrate in any form other than fiber is eventually metabolized by the body into sugar? Refined carbohydrates is a basic food in America.

Yes, and the worst carbohydrate offenders are breads, grains, cereals, pastas and starchy vegetables. You can eat these seemingly good foods every day and eventually become a diabetic. When these foods are eaten, insulin levels soar. If sugar is available and the body is given a choice between burning fat and burning sugar, it burns mostly sugar and stores the fat.

What happens to extra sugar that isn’t burned? It gets made into saturated fat, which is resistant to burning. What happens to all that stored extra fat? It produces even more insulin in response to sugar which worsens insulin resistance. This deep fat won’t burn. Deep fat (visceral fat) causes serious health problems.

The fatter we get, any weight loss diet or health concern which does not deal with high insulin will fail. And before there is any benefit, insulin levels must fall.

Horrors! If our body is in a sugar burning mode and we don’t eat, our body will break down the protein in lean tissues, including muscle and bone, into sugar.

The key and the secret is to become a fat burner by eating good fats like fish and chicken. An excellent fat is coconut oil. Good fat is good to eat. It will help you burn fat. Fat burns fat if it is good fat.

The "low fat phobia" in America has created a mind-set in the medical community and in the whole population that borders on insanity.

The body runs best when it can burn fat as fuel. Eating good fat is not what makes us fat. It is the inability to burn fat that makes us fat. And the body won’t burn fat until we eat good fats that switch the body from sugar burning to fat burning.

Overweight people are sugar burners. They need to change their bodies to fat burners.

The food industry reaps the greatest profits from starchy carbohydrates (pasta, bread, cereals), which are the sugar burning foods that cause high insulin. Far less money is required to preserve them than foods high in fat such as meat and fish, which require refrigeration during transport and in grocery stores. Far more money is spent to advertise and promote low-cost starchy foods. And think what it does for the medical establishment!

HOW OLD ARE YOU ? GETTING OF AGE !!

REVERSE AGING
TOTAL HEALTH BREAKTHROUGHS
NEWSLETTER

Finally, The First Step Toward Agelessness Is Here!
by Dr. Al Sears 10/14/2008

Imagine living to be over 100 years old while maintaining all the strength and vitality you had when you were in your 30s. Leading a rich, active life, enjoying new hobbies and pursuits, playing outdoors with your great-grandchildren . . . all without having to worry about age-related conditions like heart disease, chronic illness, fading mental powers, impotence, eyesight and hearing loss, low energy, weak, inflexible muscles and joint pain.

Now imagine being able to do this without taking a lot of dangerous prescription drugs, undergoing complicated surgery, or making repeated trips to the hospital.

Today, I’ll tell you why this is no longer a distant possibility. It’s becoming reality, and you and I can play a role. Science has cracked the code of aging. You’ll soon be able to use this science to enjoy the power of youth no matter what your age with a simple, completely safe, natural treatment — in a single tablet.

This cutting-edge anti-aging supplement is called TA-65.

To explain how it works, I’m going to tell you some of what we’ve learned over the past 20 years about why people get old in the first place. I’ll also explain the difference between “anti-aging” and life extension. They’re not the same thing. Anti-aging isn’t about just adding years to your life. It’s about preserving your youth.

Grow Younger Instead of Older

Not long ago I met a group of specialists at an anti-aging conference who’d done some pioneering work in an area of genetics I’ve been following for years. They described a plant-based compound they’d discovered that can slow the aging process dramatically and even reverse some of its consequences. And the underlying science they used to explain it jibed with what I’d learned through my own work in anti-aging.

So after learning more about their research, I decided to take a trip to their offices in New York and see for myself. I met personally with the head of the company and looked over the study they conducted with a group of men between the ages of 60 and 85 using this new concentrated extract.

The results were astonishing. After six months of treatment, a significant number of the men studied showed remarkable transformation across a range of age-related conditions, including:

Boosting immune strength
Significantly improving eyesight
A newly restored, robust sex life
Youthful, radiant skin
I was so convinced by the results that I signed up to begin TA-65 treatment myself in the coming months. I also received permission from TA Sciences, the company that holds the patent on the treatment, to use TA-65 as part of my anti-aging medical practice. I am the first doctor in the United States to sign an agreement to license and provide it to my patients — including you.

Unlock the Genetic Secrets of Aging

Bear with me for a moment to walk through a bit of the science. The conclusion is going to knock your socks off…

You already know that your cells reproduce by dividing in two. From the moment of conception until the final minutes of life, the trillions of cells in your body are regenerating through this process.

Over the course of your early years, your cells continue to divide at will with little change in overall health and longevity. This is how the growth process unfolds: your body is constantly rebuilding, repairing, and renewing itself.

What had experts stumped for decades was why cells in older folks dividing by the exact same process — started slowing down over time, eventually stopped dividing . . . and died.

Think about it: if the physiological process of cell division doesn’t change over your lifetime, shouldn’t new cells look and function the same regardless of your age?

But they don’t. You can tell the difference between a newly divided “old” cell and a newly divided “young” one just by looking at them under a microscope. Each new cell is not an exact copy of its parent cell. This is how we age. Still, the reason why remained a mystery.

The answer emerged slowly over the last half a century. The first breakthrough came in 1965, when a geneticist named Leonard Hayflick discovered that most cells only divide about 80 times, then slow down and die.1

This became known as the “Hayflick limit.” He proved there’s an “internal clock” that carefully ticks off the rate of division among all the trillions of cells in your body.

Not only that: this mysterious clock appears to “tell” each cell when to start functioning less and less efficiently . . . and when to launch a “programmed” death. It’s as if your whole lifespan is repeated in miniature at the cellular level.

Hayflick’s discovery had important implications for the field of anti-aging. His work suggested that there is a mechanism inside every cell that determines longevity.

Suppose you could somehow “tinker” with this internal clock, slow it down or put on the brakes? This seemed possible at least in theory. But we still hadn’t found out exactly where the cells’ “internal clock” is or how it works.

It was finally discovered 25 years later. The prestigious journal Nature published a groundbreaking article in 1990 that introduced the world to an explanation of the genetic mechanism that involves something called the “telomere.”2

Telomeres are small stretches of protein “caps” at the ends of every cell’s DNA. They are represented here graphically:

DNA is made up of two “strands” of long sequences of genes. As you can see, they take the shape of what’s called a “double helix” — sort of like a spiral staircase. They contain all your genetic material.

The telomeres act like the plastic fittings at the end of your shoelaces. They were previously known only for their role in healthy gene function because they keep the ends from “fraying.”

What the authors published in Nature was the new realization that the telomere is alsoyour biological clock. Each time your cells divide, a small end portion of the telomere is not copied, making your telomeres get shorter and shorter over time. Each new generation of cells has a slightly shorter telomere than its parent did. Further research confirmed it.3 Telomeric length is now known as the marker of a given cell’s age.

And, it turned out that telomeres are more than just “counters” that tick off your cell’s age. They also govern the aging process. As they shorten with each new division, they cause the chromosome to fold differently, exposing a different portion of your genome. This is how you can be so different at 72 than you were at 2. You have the same genes. But… you are transcribing or reading a different combination of genes as you age. This process eventually signals to your cells to “grow old,” stop dividing and that cell line dies off.

Later studies revealed even more promising discoveries. Researchers showed that telomeric length for certain types of cells stays the same.4 For example, some cancer cells do not lose any of their telomeres as they divide. They are technically “immortal,” and this is one of the reasons why they wreak such havoc on the body. They can keep dividing without losing any genetic material, until they finally take over.

The question remained — is there a safe way that we can maintain telomere length as your cells divide over time? We now know the answer is yes.

Reset Your Biological Clock

Over ten years ago, I learned about a biotech company called Geron Corporation. They’ve taken what we know about the telomere and explored the possibility of manipulating its length in order to stop cells from aging. Ever since they were founded in 1990, they’ve remained at the cutting edge of telomere biology.

The next amazing step in the science occurred when Geron researchers found that the key to anti-aging lies in an enzyme your body makes called “telomerase.” It can take control of the aging process by rebuilding the end of your telomeres to remain the same length with each new cell division.

We all have the gene to make telomerase, but it’s switched off.

They were exploring the possibility of inserting a gene for telomerase into aging cells or developing a drug to turn on the gene for telomerase when they hit upon a natural compound that turns on telomerase and rebuilds an aging telomere.

It comes from an ancient Chinese herb that grows in temperate northern climates. It turns out that the herb astralagus contains small amounts of a molecule named TA-65 that throws the switch on the gene that makes telomerase.

The problem is, you can’t just take astralagus and stop aging. You need a highly concentrated form of TA-65 as an extract. It has to be pure, free of toxins, and only comes from certain species of the plant.

Geron’s licensed the product to a company I’m working with. They have found it in a small region of China. They harvest tons of plants from a few select farms, each of which contains twice the normal concentration of TA-65.5 Through a unique extraction process, they’ve found a way to isolate this miraculous anti-aging molecule in its purest form and then test it for any heavy metals, pesticides, or other toxins.

The end product is TA-65 extract that’s over 90% pure.

This is the foundation for this momentous anti-aging opportunity. We’ve created a 12-month course of therapy for use in a system we call the Patton Protocol.6

I’ve also secured a contract to use a new technology to measure your telomere length over the course of the treatment. You’ll be able to literally see your cells “grow young.”

There is absolutely nothing else like this treatment in the world today. You can, with me, be the first. It is a revolution that will change the way we think about aging and revolutionize the field of anti-aging for years to come.

That’s why I’ve decided to undergo the treatment myself — and offer it to my patients.

3 Steps You Can Take to Slow Aging–Right Now

If you’re already one of my readers, you know that I’m building a new Wellness Center that will include a state-of-the art anti-aging research and treatment facility. The Sears Center for Health and Wellness will be like a cross between Canyon Ranch, the Pritikin Center & Spa, the Cooper Aerobics Center, and the Life Extension Foundation. It’s the kind of center I’ve always wanted.

As I write this, they are shipping the equipment I need to administer the TA-65 treatment.

Later this month I am hosting a one-day seminar on telomeres and TA-65 therapy. The seminar will on Sunday, October 26th at my Center for Health and Wellness in Royal Palm Beach, FL. I would like to personally invite you to attend.

You’ll learn about the new technology that measures your current biological age. This testing is a precursor to the actual TA-65 treatment.

After your test results come back, you’ll find out exactly how long your telomeres currently are and what your real “biological age” is.

This is your chance to be among the first in the world to experience the technology that actually may reverse your genetic clock. The fee to attend is $500 but if you decide to go ahead with the testing that fee will be applied to the testing fee. To sign up for the one day seminar please click here. For more details, call my wellness center at 866-792-1035 or send me an email at support@alsearsmd.com.

In the meantime, there is one other step you can take to slow down the aging process, and even help to keep your telomeres longer and your cells younger:

Keep your homocysteine levels in check. Homocysteine is an amino acid that accumulates in your tissues. It’s a natural byproduct of cell metabolism — think of it as a “waste product.” If your homocysteine levels are high, you’re at greater risk for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, heart disease, and impotence.

There’s a reason why: researchers have found that people with high homocysteine levels tripled the amount of telomere length that was lost during cell division.7 No wonder it’s linked to so many age-related diseases.

You can measure your homocysteine levels with a simple blood test. And you can lower homocysteine naturally, without drugs. Here’s what you should take to keep it in check. You can find these nutrients at most health food stores or in my own homocysteine blocking formula.

Call in a support crew

Obesity loves company: Your odds of packing on pounds rise when your friends, family, and even neighbors chunk up. The good news: The reverse also seems to be true. A study in the International Journal of Obesity found that the spouses of dieters enrolled in weight-loss programs also lost flab—without trying. The average loss by matrimony was five pounds in a year, higher in some cases (one woman lost 14 pounds to her husband's 35). If no one you know is cutting calories, it's easy to find a diet BFF using a free service like bluepont.com. Download the free software to your cell, enter your preferences and location, and you'll be alerted when a match is found.

Eyeball ingredients

A 2008 USDA report found that consumers read labels less often today than they did 10 years ago. Other studies have shown that shoppers who do often end up confused—who wouldn't be, when a tiny bottle of OJ turns out to be 2.5 servings? "Labels can lie," says Tanya Zuckerbrot, M.S., R.D., author of The F-Factor Diet. Sign up at eBrandAid.com, which lists red-flag ingredients like artificial sweeteners and MSG (recently linked to an increased risk of being overweight). Easier: Swear off any packaged food whose first four ingredients you don't recognize.

Tweak your sleep schedule

Too many of us treat weight loss like a 9-to-5 job and let loose once we're off the clock. Last year, an article in the journal Obesity reported that dieters consume more calories from Saturday morning through Sunday night than they do during the week—enough, the study authors estimated, to add up to a 9-pound gain in a year. So what's the cure for weekend splurges? In a word, routine. "One reason people eat more on the weekends is that they sleep late, miss breakfast, and compensate with a big lunch," Zuckerbrot says. Set your alarm so you can stick to your weekday routine.

Dust off your stove

To keep the lead out, be a little more like the Iron Chef. A 2008 study in the Review of Agricultural Economics found that going out for a sit-down lunch rings up an average of 184 more calories than brown-bagging it. That number climbs to 227 if you chow on fast food. What's worse, you probably have no clue how fatty your entree really is: According to recent data from the University of Arkansas, the average diner underestimates each meal by up to 600 calories. Cook at home just three days a week and you could lose a pound a week. Search tons of fast, healthy meals at recipes.womenshealthmag.com.

Invent incentives

There's motivation, and then there's motivation. A recent study (one we wish we'd taken part in) found that people whose employers paid them for every pound they lost dropped as much as 12 percent more weight than those who received no dough. Boss not ready to fork over cash? Make your own reward. "Put aside cash for every pound you lose," says licensed psychotherapist Stacy Kaiser of VH1's "Celebrity Fit Club." Use it to treat yourself to a manicure or earmark it for a favorite charity. If moolah doesn't move you, buy a teeny bikini and hang it on your refrigerator, or print out a photo of a downsized version of yourself at weightview.com.

Food shopping can really be fun. And I have my doubts about weight loss brainstorming, when you take a cursory glance at shopping carts and the (fattybitches) people pushing them to the cash counter in the food store. The gorgeous women ( and men too ) are usually in the fast-lane ( only for 1-11 items ). Pretty sure Nutrition Labels have altered minds of shoppers.

A good motivational start up is to read this book: "Get Motivated" by Tamara Lowe. Doubleday.2009. For weight loss, how you start is important. How you finish is more rewarding. Visit also: http://www.health-n-wellness-herbalbasket.com/
